Research for Music video
In my opinion, I think the main purpose of a music video nowadays is to promote the Artist. Today, this seems to be the best way to get an Artist’s single out to the public in attempt to hopefully get its targeted audience to like the song, to buy tickets to gigs, concerts and shows at which the Artist will perform at, and also to buy their single or album! Seeing as the music industries no longer rely on the selling of CD’s to gain profit, the thing they now rely on is the selling on concert tickets and merchandise, for example.
One of the other most important purpose of a music video is so the Artsist can have 'self- promotion'. In other words, the Artists (espeiclly if they are new) want the public to know and see who they are, to show what talents thay have and to show them what they want to bring. I will expand on this topic later!
A music video could also have other (more ethical) purposes too. An example is the song called ‘I got soul, but I’m not a solider’ by Young Soul Rebels. (The song is sung by British artists; N Dubz, DJ Ironik, Chipmunk, Bashy, VV Brown, Tinchy Stryder, Pixie Lott and FrankMusik). The aim of the song and music video is to raise money to support the small charity called War Child which is situated in North London. The aim of the charity is to “transform the lives of tens of thousands of children [living in developing countries that have been affected by war]. And they’re “campaigning to improve the lives of millions more”. Below is the music video and also the link to their website.

Another purpose of a music video could be to try and tell a story- maybe a story of a serious issue that the Artist feels people need to be aware of. For example the Rihanna video- ‘Man Down’… According to Rihanna she releases the song to try and tell women that they’re not alone when it comes to the issue of rape.
But according to some critics, Rihanna did the opposite, "Instead of telling victims they should seek help, Rihanna released a music video that gives retaliation in the form of premeditated murder the imprimatur of acceptability," said the PTC's Melissa Henson. But Rihanna claims that the video has "a very strong underlying message 4 girls like me." For her part, Rihanna has continued to tout the empowerment message of the clip, tweeting on Twitter, "Young girls/women all over the world ... we are a lot of things! We're strong innocent fun flirtatious vulnerable, and sometimes our innocence can cause us to be naive! We always think it could NEVER be us, but in reality, it can happen to ANY of us! So ladies be careful and listen to ymama! I love you and I care!" Below is the video.
