Laura Mulvey's ideas on representation

Research for music video

Laura Mulvey studies the representation in music videos today. One of her famous quotes is:

In other words, Mulvey is trying to explain that representation in music vidoes are very biased. The representation show that the "male gaze" concept has dominated music vidoes nowadays as women are always made the subject or shown "passively". When music videos try to portray sexuality, the video is often quite explicit as they show men fantasizing over nicely shaped women (who are often half naked) in music videos. Women are hardly ever shown in a long shot- instead there are usually medium shots and close ups to show their features such as there breasts, bum, curves, legs, lips and so on.

Mulvey argues that women are 'dismembered' in all forms of media. She believes that there is hardly any focus on women as a whole, but a strong focus on their body parts (as I have explained above). She thinks this is due to the fast- growing obsession with women looking 'perfect', and their obsession with their specific body parts such as their bum or breasts. She argues that men are always shown as whole and are hardly ever 'dismembered'.

An example of where women are shown as 'dismembered' is in the music video "I wanna love you" by Akon ft Snoop Dogg.

In this video, the main focus is on the half naked girls dancing in a sexual way to please the "male gaze" There are many close ups of their body parts, and I have taken some screen shots below.
