(Research) Analysis of a music video

For this stage of my research into music videos, the video that i have chosen to analyse is Walk This Way - Aerosmith and Run-DMC. The reason why i have chosen this video is because i think it is a great example of what a music video should be like. One other reason why i chose it is that i think it sort of challenges what you would typically expect to see in a music video.
This cover was a touchstone for the new musical sub-genre of rap rock, it then went on to inspire many other similar collaborations. Because this video crosses across two very different genres) the director of this video had to come up with a concept that would still portray the conventions of each
genre:

Rock –
· Fast editing
· Instruments
· Black jeans
· Darkness
· Performance (Band)

Rap (Old school) –
· Performance (artist rapping directly to camera)
· Narrative
· Jump-cuts (in relation to beat and tempo of music)
· Jewellery

The concept of this video is a rock band (Aerosmith) and Run-D.M.C. in a musical duel in neighbouring studios before Tyler literally breaks through the wall that separates them. The video then segues to the bands' joint performance on stage. Throughout this whole video there are a variety of shots (close ups, medium, shot reverse ect) the reason why I think the director does this is to show the audience the contrast between the two genres. Examples of these shot are i.e. close ups of the rappers chains and medium shots of the band performing on stage.
