(Research) Carol Vernallis Theory

In Carol Vernallis book ‘Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context’. She carefully talks about her analysis of edits within music videos; one of the things that she stated in her observations was that edits in music videos come much more frequently than in films and also that editing seems to occur in a rhythmic basis in relation to the beat and tempo of the song.

She stated a master shot is usually used to give the video a structure. Jump cuts and special effects are often used in very obvious ways to draw attention to them, and also the usual rules of continuity in editing are broken in order to draw attention to what is on the screen.

One music video that illustrates Vernallis’ theory is Bad romance by lady gaga. The reason why I think this is because it has a lot of very heavy editing and also it has 2-3 main base tracks that keep getting referred back to throughout the video.

Another video that I think corresponds with Vernallis’ theory is Single ladies by beyonce. I think this because in the video there is an extensive use of base tracks and editing. How ever at first glance it seems as if there is only one camera shot throughout but after doing some research I found out that there was a large number of cameras used placed in specific positions around the artist and her backing dancers to give the illusion that the video was shot in one continuous go, using only one camera
